There is a lot of information, misinformation, and outright
lies published on certain topics. They are hot button issues about which many
people feel very strongly. Many of these issues are treated as having a
definitive answer that is either right
or wrong.
Every time anything is posted concerning the topics, the
comment section turns into a pulpit for each side to scream their interpretation
of the available sources as well as their opinions of the other side’s sources.
There is no decorum as the usual rules governing debates give way to
name-calling and ad hominem attacks. Accusations of brainwashing are prevalent
and not limited to one side only. Both sides refuse to acknowledge information
that dissents from their point of view. Both sides are openly antagonistic of
each other as emotions rule the responses.
Stop it.
Just stop it.
You’re not helping the situation when you destroy the lines
of communication. When you assume that what you are told is beyond question,
you are feeding into the problem. When you then use said information to shame
someone for their decision, you are the person in the wrong, not them.
Never assume that you
have the right to dictate someone else’s choices.
It’s a basic concept but people seem to feel that they can
do it, usually for “the betterment of society as a whole”. It’s the biggest
problem facing our society today. Everyone falls into the trap of thinking that
they have all the answers. Oh, but this source backs me up and it trumps yours.
The issue is clearly black and white.
Stop reacting.
Now think.
Why are you objecting to their choice? What gives you
authority over them? If roles were reversed, how would them dictating your
choice make you feel? Why do you think the government should be involved? When
does that stop?
You have to be your own advocate. If you have someone under
your care, you have to be informed—not in the opinions of other, but in facts.
You have to get your information directly from credible sources, and news
stations don’t count. They sensationalize everything in order to maximize
profit for their owners.
Everyone has the right to their opinions, but facts are
not subjective. Just because you’re the loudest voice doesn’t make your “facts”
correct. Just because one source backs you up doesn’t mean that your opinion is
the best option out there, or the only acceptable one.
